Getting Started:
Today was my first day as an intern with Belmont Abbey College within the Athletic Department. Initial meeting was with my mentor; Paul Lyon Associate Athletic Director. Paul is in charge of day to day decisions within the department, while also running the NCAA compliance department at Belmont Abbey ensuring all rules and regulations are followed.
During our first meeting, Mr. Lyon asked what my specific hopes and goals were while under his guidance to gain a better understanding of just what I want to do, and where I want to end up one day. I expressed my desire to one day be a college athletic director potentially, and the ultimate goal of the mentorship is to gain a more well rounded understanding of all aspects of a college athletics department. Currently, as the Assistant Director of Athletic Facilities, my understanding is limited to facilities and projects thus the mentorship has the opportunity to see compliance related items.
Throughout the first meeting, it was determined that I would be assistant in a multitude of differing projects, and not focusing solely in one area. Initial projects include scheduling and managing athletic department student workers, in addition to assisting with compliance documents. I was then informed to start working with Brooks Leger Coordinator of Creative Media and Athletic Communications. Brooks has overseen the work studies the past five years, and has recently taken on more marketing roles. As a result, I will be doing the bulk of the work with work study's moving forward to take some work off his plate. The opportunity to work with Brooks, and gain valuable management skills is exciting knowing the skill will be important as I hope to move into similar positions in the future!
