Friday consisted of my weekly sign up sheet creations for the weight room and game day staffing sheets. This process has proven to be a very good option for keeping track of users and staff which will continue to be implemented in the future without question. Today however it is a bit more challenging. With students going home over break, many of my workers will be away and unable to staff games. Thus I am training them for this coming week prior to their departure along with other full time staff who step in over the holiday. Trying to get full time staff to volunteer over the break is challenging and will take the assistance of the administration filling large numbers for basketball. Still a work in progress, but at least the sign up is created and ready for those willing.
With basketball season right around the corner, I find myself having to learn all the roles of the game day staff members in order to train my new crew. The positions include: game clock, shot clock, scoreboard, score book, entrance screeners and crowd control. After doing extensive research and learning the roles in depth myself, I scheduled two students to come in who would be new to the table positions for training. I spent an hour with each student training one on the score book, and one on shot and game clock. I took the time to send them the official packets provided by the NCAA on how to do those roles so they could read them prior to training. During training we went over each role and its rules. After having a general idea on what to expect, I pulled up an old NCAA basketball game, and we practiced at the scores table filling out both the book and running the clock. It was a great way of making the training fun yet applicable using our resources. Both students appear competent for each role to fill in at different spots, and we should now be prepared for our up coming games.
