Today I completed my final hour of the 200 hour mentorship. I spent time in the morning having a final checkin/ recap of my mentorship with my mentor Paul Lyon. We went over some of my future goals and aspirations and he gave me great advice on how to obtain them moving forward in addition to providing feedback on all the work I did over the semester. The required mentorship forced me to go out of my comfort zone, and obtain additional knowledge in a variety of areas including marketing (google), compliance (education course design), game management (game knowledge on soccer, volleyball and basketball) as well as an enourmous amount of management skills (work study program). There is no question that the opportunities that Belmont Abbey College provided me will help me be successful in the future, and continue to grow and build my resume for bigger and better roles.
After my meeting with my mentor, I trained two more students on game clock, shot clock and how to keep a basketball score book. Thanks to my student worker supervisor role, I have acquired many skills that help me get one step closer to being a game manager who knows each and every function required to run an event. I hope over time that I continue to learn additional responsibilities, but in just a few short months I have learned more than I did watching and playing sports over 27 years. There is so much going on behind the scenes that dictates why a whistle blows, why a cammercial is so long etc. I have a new found love and appreciation for everything that goes on to run a game, and cannot wait to do more with game management roles in the future. Tonight I had the opportunity to watch my student workers run the table with efficiency and it was extremely rewarding to know I had a big role in the smooth operation of an NCAA game. This role has allowed me to form bonds with students, and help get me back in to an educator/mentor role working with them daily. I hope to teach them everything I know and hopefully one day some of them make it big!
