Today was my first time interviewing candidates for the work study position. In reality, it was my first time sitting on the other side of the table interviewing anyone on my own in the hiring position. Sure I have had the opportunity to sit in on other hiring processes, but never being the one running the interview, controlling the flow and culture that is created within the conversation. To be honest, it was just as nerve wrecking being the one interviewing candidates, as it is being interviews.
To help myself in the interview, I required students to provide me a class schedule prior to the interview that would allow me to understand their actual availability to devote to a job in addition to any extracurricular activities.
Ultimately, I conducted two interviews today. I opened each interview by asking the students about their summer and how they have handled the pandemic as an ice breaker question to settle the nerves for each side, followed up by having them tell me about themselves prior to diving into pertinent information for the job. Overall the interviews went well, and I was able to learn a bit about the students, their commitment, intentions of applying and ultimately if they were a fit or not for the department in their respective role. In the end, both students were hired, and follow up paperwork is now required/ approval from HR.
