One of the most intriguing topics the NCAA rule book discusses are the regulations on sports wagering from all aspects including staff, coaches, administrators and even the student athletes themselves. Many college athletic staff members know bits and pieces of the rule, but very few understand its implications. Today, I sat down and continued work on a Sports Wagering pretest quiz for the next months compliance education session. With college football in full swing, and other major sports about to begin, it is a great time to educate staff, and address and misconceptions.

The rules do not permit athletic department staff, faculty athletic reps, coaches, conference office members and student athletes to wager on sports that the NCAA has a championship for. Although many people know they cannot bet, they do not know the ramifications if they were to get caught doing so. If a student were to be caught gambling, they would lose all remaining eligibility, and staff members are subject to school discipline AND NCAA discipline if they feel a school did not handle it aggressively enough. Understanding this significance to eligibility and ones career can deter the gambling that still takes place according to a survey student athletes anonymously took. The quiz also covers specific things people can and cannot bet on, and the overall goal once again is to simply educate the staff so they are aware of the rules and punishments associated with them.

In addition to the quiz and studying the NCAA handbook to find information, I made this weeks weight room sign up sheets and verified students were cleared who signed up to work out that evening were not on any covid protocol return stages.
