In addition to my weekly sign up sheets for the weight rooms, I spent a large portion of the week collecting my student worker time sheets. To date, I have 27 workers under my leadership of whom I have to track hours and forward on to the business office for monthly payment. The deadline comes with checking their hours and verifying the dates and times worked and having them come into the office and sign off on the times. Trying to coordinate with 27 people in one days time is very hectic knowing they are all in classes and many involved in sports. Thus it was a full day off students dropping in, checking in on how life is going for them, and just getting feedback and offering support to them as the semester continues on.
My mentor Paul Lyon often talks about the importance of building relationships with the students and making sure they are valued. So it may have not been a productive day, but it was however vital just to be a friendly face and get time to catch up with them all ensuring our interactions are genuine and not transnational as Paul would say. I absolutely agree with Mr. Lyon and his thinking on this as a manager, and believe it is something that will stick with me forever in regards to being a successful leader who is viewed in a positive manner, and someone people want to work for.
