With another Friday comes a new round of created sign up sheets, in addition to sending them out and filing away the old. This week however I took the time to do a more detailed breakdown of the previous sign ups to find out what the attendance rate was for those who are signing up.

Reports from the student workers have been very discouraging, indicating that many people are signing up nightly, however very few are actually showing up for their slots. Today, I sat down and ran the numbers. To date, 62 different students have signed up to utilize the weight room. Of those 62 patrons, they have signed up to work out 188 time slots over the course of the semester, and only 88 of those times, the students have actually shown up for their workout. This comes out to a 44% show up rate. The numbers are extremely low and disapointing, and thus I have begun to collect additional data on why people are not showing up and wanting to utilize their times.

Preliminary reports from my student workers suggest that:

-The times are to late, and students get busy with homework, or tired from a long day (which is fair simply because of team lifts taking up the weight room throughout the day).

-3 pm deadline for sign up for a 7:30 pm is to soon for the students to make up their mind on if they truly want to and plan to go to the gym.

-The weather and temperature is not as conducive at night and it deters students from showing up when it gets dark and cold.

All are very valid and understandable reasons, yet challenging to change. Weight room hours cannot move earlier due to block out times by teams. The only option would be having a later sign up deadline (makes it more challenging for me to approve those who signed up by checking covid restriction list) but is doable. With that all being said, I look forward to continuing to monitor the trend and getting feedback from those using the space.
