As I prepare for the reopening of the weight room, I continue to collect as much information about how it ran and operated in the past prior to my internship beginning. My goal is not to change much, but change enough to ensure any previously neglected issues are resolved while addressing Covid-19 concerns and issues at the same time.
My first stop was with the Strength and Conditioning staff of three. They provided me with an enormous amount of information from the good and bad of everything related to the weight room and its "open hours" which I would now be overseeing. The main takeaways from the meeting were that more structure needed to be in place for the student workers so they always knew what was expected of them. Simply opening the doors and closing them like they had done in the past was not enough especially under current conditions. As a result, I put together a comprehensive list that provided each worker, new or old a quick reference guide (which I plan to print out and have on file for the students at the check-in table). It includes equipment for general knowledge, general rules and expectations, sensitization process, along with their shift duties check list to go through each night in addition to emergency contact information. After spending a few hours on the document, and having it checked over by the strength coaches, it has been finilized and added to the documents for students to review when I train them in the coming days.
