Today I conducted three more interviews with potential student workers. I am now up to 15 approved student workers with a number of pending hires. Following the interview phase, I am faced with the decision of hiring or not hiring each student. Once the decision is made to hire the student, I notify the student and provide them with follow up paperwork to complete. In this paperwork, students must set up a zoom meeting with the our Human Resources director Cheryl Trotter. During the meeting students are given direct deposit forms and additional forms to fill out.

With the number of students being suggested for hire, there is now a lot of emails and follow up paper work and questions that I am working on daily to get the staff all hired and approved before they are needed to work in the coming week dependent upon the roles they are hired for.

This process has taught me how important it will be in a future role, or even in this role if it becomes mine next year on promoting the position earlier and getting the majority of the students hired prior to school starting back up rather than trying to do it all simultaneous as campus is busy and my other duties grow. In years past, the job is typically spread through word of mouth from returning students to their friends which only happens once everyone is on campus. Now that I know many of these workers, I can send out a personal reminder to the previous years workers in the summer to have them apply and tell their friends who they think would be good candidates at that time also to speed up this process and avoid the log jam the first few weeks of school. Early and often is best!
