As the school year approaches, students have clearly started gearing up for their return. Each day, new students are applying through the human resources online portal which is an excellent sign. With my end goal of 35 student workers, I have had my hands full with scheduling and conducting interviews with the students via zoom trying to find times to meet as they wrap up summer jobs. As the interviews continue to go well, I have begun to recognize a few reoccurring themes in the interviews.
The positive theme is that many applicants are sports management majors which is exciting to hear. The thought of training someone passionate about the sports industry is exciting, and I hope their commitment level is high due to the reward of their experience they will gain. On the other hand, majority of the applicants are student athletes. This is both good and bad as they can help do work for their programs before and after games such as laundry and preparing the fields, however it leaves me with very few workers on game day in a spring filled with games of all sports. Of the 14 applicants (all of which were hired) only one was a non athlete. Sadly, non athletes simply have not applied, and after speaking with the former manager of work studies, this is the norm. As a result, I have put emphasis on spreading the word through my hired applicants to refer friends that both play and do not play sports hopefully triggering more applicants but preferably non athletic ones for the many positions still needed. What the week has taught me is the necessity for a diversified work force from specific sports, to non athletes entirely. Identifying this will help me in future searches and how to recruit accordingly.
Below is a running spreadsheet I have created that showcases some of the information on the document which portrays how many workers are athlete/ non athlete. The document helps me keep track of names, who has been interviewed, activities involved in, preferred hours etc. all of which can help me in decision making when it comes time for scheduling.
