Over the course of the next few weeks, majority of my work will be focused on the hiring process of students in addition to helping them complete paperwork following my recommendation for hiring to human resources.

On day two of interviews, I interviewed two more students. One candidate was once again an excellent fit for the position, and excited at the opportunity to learn more about college athletics, and what goes on behind the scenes. Unfortunately, I came across my first student who was not an ideal fit. The student lacked energy, excitement, and openness to helping out in a range of ways. Instead the young man only wanted to work in the weight room (very limited responsibilities) and did not anticipate working many hours. At the conclusion of the interview, I informed the student that we still had a number of students to interview, and that I would reach back out once interviews were completed. In doing so, I left the door open to hiring the student in case I do not have enough applicants to fill all positions. At the same time, it is not my intention to hire the young man unless absolutely necessary.

The interview itself however was a very good learning experience for me. The young man had very short answers and was difficult to get information out of. This made me rethink how I approach questions, and made me reword my delivery to ensure students had to provide more information and not just yes or no responses. Additionally, I learned the difficulty of not being able to say yes right away. Moving forward, this will be a tool now added to my repertoire.
